SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME  

The symptoms of coronary artery disease are mild in early-stage like chest discomfort or shortness of breath associated with physical activities. The symptoms of a heart attack include;

  • Pain in the chest (angina)
  • Increased heart rate
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue

CAUSES OF ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME  

Risk factors for developing acute coronary syndrome are;

  • Family history of heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • High stress

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME  

Due to the above-mentioned causes plaque build-up in the wall of coronary arteries. Plaque is made up of cholesterol deposits. Plaque buildup causes narrowing of coronary arteries (atherosclerosis) and leads to the blockage of blood supply to the heart muscle.

Auscultation – listening to the chest with a stethoscope.

  • Electrocardiogram
  • Echocardiogram
  • Exercise stress test
  • Coronary angiogram

  • Surgical procedures to restore the blood flow to the heart

PROGNOSIS OF ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME  

  • Acute coronary syndrome needs immediate treatment otherwise it may become life-threatening.

  • In Ayurveda, the acute coronary syndrome is interpreted as kapha –vata predominant sannipataja hridroga.

  • Improper food and regimens – virudha ahara and vihara
  • Rakta Dhatu dushti
  • Rasa dhatu dushti

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME  

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath on exertion

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME  

  • Agnimandya leads to the formation of ama and dhatu agni mandya leads to impaired dhatu parinama and rasadhushti causes upalepatwa and sanga (obstruction) in the arteries which hamper vyana vayu leading to hridroga.

LAKSHANA- AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME  

  • Shortness of breath on exertion – swasa rodha
  • Fatigue – klama
  • Palpitation – hridrava
  • Pain in the chest- vedana in uras
  • Sweating – sweda udgama

  • Yapya roga – symptoms are manageable in most the cases

  • Avoid food items that produce kapha, vata dosha imbalance like cold, sweet and dry food, which is hard to digest. Because kapha, vata imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items
  • Avoid heavy exercises

YOGA FOR ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME  

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – relieves mental stress

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, and the body relaxed. The patient has to close one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
