PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF COLON POLYPS
Healthy cells grow and divide in an orderly way. Mutations in certain genes can cause cells to continue dividing even when new cells aren’t needed. In the colon, this unregulated growth can cause polyps to form. Polyps can develop anywhere in your large intestine.
DIAGNOSIS OF COLON POLYPS
- Faecal occult blood testing – (FOBT) may indicate bleeding from a colonic polyp.
· Colonoscopy is the ‘gold standard’ method of detecting intra-luminal colonic lesions.
· Computed tomographic colonography
· Magnetic resonance colonography (MRC)
· Faecal DNA and antigen testing
TREATMENTS OF COLON POLYPS
· Endoscopic forceps polypectomy
· Endoscopic snare polypectomy is the preferred way to remove a polyp
· Endoscopic submucosal dissection – (ESD) is a technique for resecting sessile polyps that are not amenable to snare polypectomy.
· Surgery
PROGNOSIS OF COLON POLYPS
- It is curable and the symptoms are manageable in the early stage of the disease.
- The earlier polyps are removed, the less likely will become malignant.

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, and the body relaxed. The patient has to close one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
- The practices of shatkriya or yogic cleansing techniques purify the body and prevent digestive problems.
- In colon polyps, one may experience constipation or difficulty in passing stool. Basti kriya aid smooth peristalsis movement for quick elimination.
