Phlegm is the mucus type substance produced as a waste in the body. It gets expelled from the body through natural orifices. In many of the diseases, the phlegm is produced but not expelled out properly. This causes swelling and other discomforts. If the phlegm is inflamed, it can lead to many disease conditions. It is very important to maintain a balanced and healthy metabolism with proper digestion, absorption, assimilation and excretion. Any damage in any of these organs or systems can cause severe diseased conditions over time.

Treatment for the phlegm depends upon the underlying disease. Treating the disease like diabetes will reduce the problem of phlegm remarkedly.
Medications like diuretics, anti-allergens and anti-pyretics are used in common cases.
Usually, phlegm has a good prognosis but chance of recurrence is high.

The word phlegm is used to denominate Kaphadosha elaborated in Ayurveda. But as a disease, phlegm can be compared with Kaphadushti(vitiation of Kapha).

Due to the causative factors with similar qualities of Kapha, it gets excess in quantity first and later overflow into other places in the vitiated or aggravated form and cause diseases where the channels are damaged or at the sites in the body where any abnormality/imbalance is present.

Warm, dry and easy to digest foods with less oil

Junk foods- cause disturbance in digestion and reduces the bioavailability of the medicine
Carbonated drinks – makes the stomach more acidic and disturbed digestion
Refrigerated and frozen foods – causes weak and sluggish digestion by weakening Agni (digestive fire)
Milk and milk products – increase kapha, cause obstruction in channels and obesity
Curd – causes vidaaha and thereby many other diseases

Freshly cooked and warm food processed with cumin seeds, ginger, black pepper, ajwain etc
Protect yourself from cold climate.
Better to avoid exposure to excessive sunlight wind rain or dust.
Maintain a regular food and sleep schedule.
Avoid holding or forcing the urges like urine, faeces, cough, sneeze etc.
Avoid sedentary lifestyle.
Regular stretching and mild cardio exercises are advised. Also, specific yogacharya including naadisuddhi pranayama, bhujangaasana, pavanamuktasana is recommended.
Regular exercise helps improve bioavailability of the medicine and food ingested and leads to positive health.
Yoga can maintain harmony within the body and with the surrounding system.
