TYPES OF THALASSEMIA

  • Alpha thalassemia
  • Beta thalassemia

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF THALASSEMIA

  • Fatigue
  • Yellow discolouration in the skin
  • Pallor
  • Anaemia
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dark urine
  • Slow growth

CAUSES OF THALASSEMIA

  • Gene mutations

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF THALASSEMIA

In the case of thalassemia mutations occur in the gene that makes haemoglobin. This causes impaired production of one type of globin chain (alpha chain in alpha thalassemia and beta chain in beta-thalassemia). Unpaired chains cause problems with RBC production and maturation leads to haemolytic anaemia.

DIAGNOSIS OF THALASSEMIA

  • Complete blood count
  • Haemoglobin count
  • Prenatal testing – chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis

TREATMENTS FOR THALASSEMIA

  • Blood transfusion
  • Stem cell transplant
  • Iron chelation therapy

PROGNOSIS OF THALASSEMIA

  • Prognosis is based on the type and severity of thalassemia. Some people with beta-thalassemia intermedia and major can be cured with a stem cell transplant.

COMPLICATIONS OF THALASSEMIA

  • Iron overload
  • Spleen enlargement
  • Heart problems
  • Bone deformities

THALASSEMIA AND AYURVEDA

  • Beeja dushti

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF THALASSEMIA

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF THALASSEMIA

  • Vitiation of tridoshas along with beejadushti affects the raktavaha srothas. Rakta dhatu is affected and produces rakta vikriti. Persistent production of vikrita rakta dhatu leads to symptoms of pandu (anaemia).

LAKSHANA- AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF THALASSEMIA

  • Haaridra netra twak – yellow discolouration of eyes, skin
  • Vivarna mutratha – dark urine
  • Pandu – anaemia
  • Pleehodara – spleen enlargement

AYURVEDIC PROGNOSIS OF THALASSEMIA

  • Avoid excess iron-containing diet
  • Consume vitamin B containing diets

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR THALASSEMIA

  • Avoid food items that produce dosha imbalance like sour, cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.

  • Take proper rest.

YOGA FOR THALASSEMIA

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – refresh the body and mind

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, and the body relaxed. The patient has to close one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
