Ayurvedic Treatment for Bacterial Infections

Ayurvedic treatment for bacterial infections have a holistic approach. It considers the reasons, the environment and parasites. Ayurvedic treatment is host (human being) centered and considers the reason in the host for creating an environment favourable for the parasite. Bacteria are microscopic, single-celled organisms that live in diverse environments. Bacteria have many shapes ranging from spheres to rods and spirals. In bacterial infection there is a proliferation of bacteria on or inside the body occur, resulting in the manifestation of diseases.

  • Bacterial infections can spread directly by contact with an infected person
  • Bacterial infections spread through body fluids such as blood, saliva etc
  • Infections are spread directly from an infected mother to her child either through the placenta or during childbirth
  • Bacterial food infections are spread through contaminated food and water
  • Zoonotic bacterial infections are transmitted through infected animals

 PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

Pathogenesis refers both to the mechanism of infection and to the mechanism by which disease develops. Virulence is the measure of the pathogenicity of an organism. The degree of virulence is related directly to the ability of the organism to cause disease despite host resistance mechanisms; it is affected by numerous variables such as the number of infecting bacteria, route of entry into the body, specific and nonspecific host defence mechanisms, and virulence factors of the bacterium. Virulence can be measured experimentally by determining the number of bacteria required to cause animal death, illness, or lesions in a defined period after the bacteria are administered by a designated route.

DIAGNOSIS OF BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

  • Bacterial culturing
  • Antibiotic sensitivity testing
  • Gram staining
  • Full blood count
  • C-reactive protein(CRP)

PROGNOSIS OF BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

  • Prognosis is based on the type of bacterial infection

BACTERIAL INFECTIONS AND AYURVEDA

According to the Ayurveda, anyone who has developed an imbalance in “doshas,” and has thereby weakened their immune system, may be subject to a microbial infection which is considered a symptom of that imbalance.

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

  • Imbalance of doshas
  • Vitiation of dhatus
  • Reduced immunity (vyadhi kshamatwam)

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

  • Jwara – fever

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

A healthy individual has a strong immune system and, therefore, it will be difficult for the microbial infection to take hold. Balance in dosha, dhatu and agni provide a strong and well-functioning immune system capable of defending against microbial infection. Bacteria invade the body when there is a defect in the immune system.

LAKSHANA- AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

  • Jwara – fever
  • Agnimandya – indigestion
  • Sada – weakness
  • Atisara – diarrhoea
  • Chardi – vomiting

AYURVEDIC PROGNOSIS OF BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

  • Sadhyasadhyata (prognosis) is based on the extent of bacterial infection.

CHIKITSA- AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

Ayurvedic local treatment for Bacterial infections

  • In bacterial skin infections, local application of the paste of haridra, neem leaf, thulsi are effective
  • Infected wounds washing with triphala kashayam and aragvadhadi kashayam.

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

  • Avoid food items which produce dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance reduces immunity.
  • Consume easily digestible food items, lukewarm water
  • Daily bathing
  • Avoid contact with infected persons
  • Wear masks if you go outside

 YOGA FOR BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – Cleans the respiratory passage from bacterial infections

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
