CHRONIC SINUSITIS

Chronic sinusitis is a long-lasting sinus infection that usually lasts for 3months or more. It is the infection and inflammation affecting the four paired cavities (spaces) in the head (sinuses).

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CHRONIC SINUSITIS

  • Postnasal drip

CAUSES OF CHRONIC SINUSITIS

  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Nasal polyps
  • Deviated nasal septum

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF CHRONIC SINUSITIS

In chronic sinusitis viruses or bacteria enter the body through the mouth, eyes or nose. The virus can spread through droplets in the air. It also spreads by direct contact with someone who has a cold or other respiratory infection or by sharing contaminated objects. The infections spread to the sinuses leads to inflammation and associated symptoms. Increased nasal secretions cause a running nose. The symptoms last for 3months or more.

DIAGNOSIS OF CHRONIC SINUSITIS

  • Diagnosis is based on the signs and symptoms
  • Physical examination – tenderness of face and nose
  • Nasal endoscopy
  • Culturing of nasal discharge
  • MRI, CT scan

TREATMENTS FOR CHRONIC SINUSITIS

  • Decongestant nasal drops or sprays
  • Antipyretics – in fever
  • Antibiotics – in the case of bacterial infections
  • Immune therapy
  • Surgical interventions to correct the structural deformities

PROGNOSIS OF CHRONIC SINUSITIS

Most people with sinusitis usually recover within one or two weeks like cold, although the fatigue may persist for longer periods. However, some people are more prone to developing chronic sinusitis. More than one therapy is needed to cure the symptoms of chronic sinusitis.

COMPLICATIONS OF CHRONIC SINUSITIS

  • Spreading of the infection to other body parts like bones are the major complication
  • Otitis media
  • Meningitis
  • Permanent loss of taste and smell

The etiological factors lead to vitiation of vata and other dosas individually or collectively associated with or without raktha accumulating in the head, producing pratishyaya and shirasula.

  • Drinking water boiled with dry ginger

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR CHRONIC SINUSITIS

  • Avoid food items that produce dosha imbalance like cold and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume easily digestible food items, lukewarm water
  • Avoid head bathing
  • Avoid exposure to the cold environment

 

YOGA FOR CHRONIC SINUSITIS

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – Cleans the respiratory passage removes the nasal congestion

 

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, and the body relaxed. The patient has to close one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
